Movie Magic: Filming Locations I’ve Photographed

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit a number of movie and television filming locations over the years in my travels.  In this post I’ll share some of my favorites.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has been featured in such varied works as I Am Legend, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Gossip Girl.

This charming house in Pasadena was featured in the Father of the Bride movies.  Click here to read an article about the family who owns it today.

A tour of the Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank offered me the opportunity to photograph the iconic Central Perk set from Friends.

The Gamble House in Pasadena was used as the exterior of Doc Brown’s house in the Back to the Future movies.

This corner of the Warner Brothers backlot in Burbank has been featured in such varied works as Gilmore Girls, Pretty Little Liars, and Batman, among many others.

This stretch of Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park in Montan was seen in the opening credits of the film The Shining.

The Timberline Lodge in Oregon was used for the exterior hotel shots in the movie The Shining.

This building on the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills, California was used as Dr. Mike’s clinic in the television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.  The Paramount Ranch has been used in movies and TV shows dating back to the beginning of film.  Sadly, it burned down in 2018.  The Paramount Ranch is also featured in the top image in this post.

This stretch of Monument Valley in Arizona was famously seen in Forrest Gump, but the area has been featured in countless films.

You may recognize this view of Cannon Beach, Oregon from Ecola State Park, as it appeared in the cult classic The Goonies.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park was shown in the movie Spencer’s Mountain, the inspiration for the television series The Waltons.

This area in Grand Teton National Park was also featured in Spencer’s Mountain, but the mountains can be seen in many other works too, including Brokeback Mountain and Shane.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Southern California filming locations in this post, read this post that I wrote about a map I made of them.
