My Visit to Old Tavern Farm

It’s no secret that I love horses, particularly thoroughbreds. I love photographing thoroughbreds at all stages of life, from the time they are foals, through their racing years and into their retirement. I recently had the chance to photograph some beautiful foals at Old Tavern Farm situated on Saratoga Lake in my hometown of Saratoga Springs, NY. In this post I’ll share some photos I took at the farm.

The barn is stunning. Inside the barn are two posts which belonged to the original 1800s tavern which previously occupied the property, giving it its current name.

The property has an unbeatable view of the lake.

We were introduced to this yearling, an Uncle Mo filly out of one of their mares, To the Moon Alice, who will be up for auction at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton New York Breds sale.

Owner Walter Borisenok (not pictured) explained the process from which a foal becomes a racehorse and all that is involved, and the role the farm plays in that. We learned that this filly’s half brother, Two for Charging, who is owned and raced by the farm, recently won a race at Saratoga.

Porkchop the pig.

We got to meet some of the mares and foals.

Some of their beautiful foals. It’s fun to imagine who might grow up to be the next Secretariat or American Pharoah.

Getting some affection.

To the Moon Alice is the dam of the Uncle Mo yearling.

I love the markings on this foal.

Yum!

Treats for the mares!

There were more horses to meet inside the beautiful barn.
