Arizona Excursion Part V: Visiting the Salt River Area

Wild horses graze near the Salt River in Mesa, AZ.

Back in April of last year, I took a trip to Arizona. One of my stops there was the Salt River area near Phoenix, where wild horses roam. In this post I will share some of my posts from that leg of my trip. Click here to read all my Arizona posts.

En route to the Salt River area from Sedona, I took this photo at the Sunset Point Rest Area of a sundial which pays tribute to Arizona Department of Transportation employees who died while serving the state.

Down below, a landscape of saguaro cacti.

There are, fittingly, many Saguaro cacti by the shore of Saguaro Lake, which leads into the Salt River. This photo and the one below were taken at the Butcher Jones Recreation site.

If you’ve never seen Saguaro cacti before, this is a good place to start! Click here to order a print of this photo.

The Saguaro de Norte Recreation site offers another view of the lake. Click here to order a print of this photo.

The landscape of the lake, and pretty much all of Arizona, is a change of scenery from what I’m used to in upstate New York.

In this part of Arizona, there is no shortage of Saguaro cacti. Click here to order a print of this photo.

By the shores of the Salt River, you can often see wild horses roaming, but I had no such luck when I was there.

Waiting for the horses, I captured many images of the river. Luckily it was a pretty time of day. Click here to order a print of this photo.

This is one of my favorite photos of the river. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Still no horses, but not a bad spot to spend an afternoon. Click here to order a print of this photo.

At the end of the day, all the waiting paid off! I spotted a trio of wild horses grazing by the side of the road. Click here to order a print of this photo.

I love his spiky mane.

Ah, the perfect sunset to end what turned out to be a very satisfying day. Click here to order a print of this photo.

After all the photos of saguaro cacti I took on this trip, this one turned out to be the best. I ended up making it into an illustration (see below). Click here to order a print of this photo.
