As a teacher and a photographer, I have an interest in photographing school buildings. Over the years I have photographed many: old and new, authentic and reproduction, K-12 and higher education. What you’ll find in this post is a collection of my favorites.
I took this photo at the abandoned Bennett College in Millbrook, NY. I believe this is the science building that was built just before the college closed.
Visiting Bodie Ghost Town in California is an experience like no other. By far my favorite part, though, was visiting the school house. This school house was the second one in Bodie. They say the first was burned down by a student!
Here’s the inside of the Bodie Schoolhouse. It looks kind of ethereal because the windows were really dirty.
Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY with its modern architecture makes a great photo subject.
This is a model of an early 20th century classroom at the New York State Museum in Albany.
I absolutely love the exterior of Lake George Junior-Senior High School, especially in spring with the flowers out front.
I took this photo of Lake Avenue Elementary School, in Saratoga Springs, NY, which used to be a high school.
This photo of an abandoned school house near Boyd, OR, is one of my favorite photos from my trip to the Pacific Northwest.
The Eastham Historical Society on Cape Cod is located in a former one room school house, which is still set up to look that way.
Nauset Regional Middle School on Cape Cod fits right in in New England.
The Berkshire School of the Arts in Stockbridge, MA has a unique exterior.
I took this photo of the Union Academy at Heritage Village in Largo, FL.
The Big Beaver School House is located at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Glengarry, Ontario.
Imagine what life was like for a young Almanzo Wilder and his classmates, as depicted in this photo I took at the reconstructed school house at the Almanzo Wilder Farm in Burke, NY.
I took this photo of Sheldon Hall at SUNY Oswego, my alma mater, at the very end of my last semester. SUNY Oswego started as Oswego Normal School, a school for teachers. Oh, and the snow is thanks to a little Photoshop magic.
This building, on the Sony Pictures lot, currently serves as an office. When this was the MGM lot, many years ago, however, it was a schoolhouse attended by such greats as Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Lana Turner, and Freddie Bartholomew.
The buildings of Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL, has the distinct Spanish style architecture the city is known for.
I’ve always loved the beautiful Nott Memorial at Union College in Schenectady, NY.
I scouted out this abandoned schoolhouse in Swan Valley, Idaho in advance. I’m guessing it hasn’t functioned as a school in a very long time.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a photo from my own classroom. This is my favorite photo I’ve taken of my French classroom in Saratoga Springs, NY. I just loved how the sun was shining in the window that afternoon.
