Looking Back at the Belmont, Part II: The Training

Dornoch breezes inside of Ramblin’ Wreck ahead of the Belmont Stakes

In my last post, I shared photos from the races of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. In this post, I’ll share some photos I took at Saratoga Race Course and Oklahoma Training Track of horses who ran in races that weekend.

Kubrick finished fourth in the Grade III Poker Stakes on Belmont day.

Sierra Leone was favored in the Belmont Stakes, but finished third behind Dornoch and Mindframe.

Mel’s Baby Sister finished second in an allowance race on June 9.

Grade I Ashland Stakes winner Leslie’s Rose finished second in the Grade I Acorn Stakes on June 7.

Aspen Grove finished seventh in the Grade I New York Stakes on June 7.

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan finished eighth in the Belmont Stakes

Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Just F Y I finished sixth in the Grade I Acorn Stakes on June 7.

I’m Very Busy finished seventh in the Grade I Manhattan Stakes on Belmont day.

Mindframe finished second in the Belmont Stakes. He is pictured here breezing inside of Champion Two-Year-Old Male Fierceness, who was initially being pointed towards the Belmont, but was instead given a break.

Dornoch finished first in the Belmont Stakes, posting his first Grade I victory, and the first for his trainer, Danny Gargan.

Tizzy in the Sky finished sixth in the Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes on Belmont day.

War Like Goddess finished third in the Grade I New York Stakes on June 7.

Bendoog finished second in the Grade II Suburban Stakes on Belmont day.

Grade II Wood Memorial winner Resilience finished tenth in the Belmont Stakes.

I spent a lot of time taking photos of Preakness winner Seize the Grey, who finished seventh in the Belmont Stakes. In the very first photo, exercise rider Brittany Troxtell shows the colt to his jockey, Jaime Torres, via video chat.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include some photos of trainer D. Wayne Lukas and his pony Bucky! With Seize the Grey’s win, he became the oldest trainer ever to win the Preakness.

Kentucky Oaks winner Thorpedo Anna won the Grade I Acorn Stakes easily on June 7.

West Memorial finished fifth in the Astoria Stakes on June 6.

Champion Older Dirt Female Idomatic finished second in the Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes on Belmont day.

Didia finished first in the Grade I New York Stakes on June 7.

Arzak finished second in the Grade I Jaipur Stakes on Belmont day.

Carl Spackler finished fifth in the Grade III Poker Stakes on Belmont Day.

White Abarrio finished fifth in the Grade I Met Mile on Belmont Day.

Randomized finished first in the Grade I Ogden Phipps Stakes on Belmont day.

Bonus! Here are some photos of Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch resuming training after his big win.
