My Best of the Decade: Saratoga Springs and Area

Over the next couple weeks I will be sharing some of my favorite photos I took over the past decade. In this first installment, I will share some of my favorite photos I’ve taken in and around my hometown of Saratoga Springs, NY.  You may notice the absence of any horse photos in this post.  That is because my next installment will feature my best equine photos of the decade.

A Fall Stroll in Saratoga: October 21, 2012
I took this photo walking down North Broadway near the Skidmore campus.  It has easily become one of my favorite photos.

A Snowy Scene:  January 16, 2013
I took this photo on a snowy evening in Haviland Cove Park in Glens Falls.

Yaddo Gate:  June 20, 2013
I took this photo on a beautiful spring evening on a meet up with my photography group.

A Beautiful Fall Afternoon in Lake George:  October 12, 2013
I went to the shore of Lake George, set up my camera, popped a neutral density filter on my lens, and took this photo.

Sunrise at the Saratoga Battlefield:  August 9, 2014
Waking up at 4:30 AM is not fun.  But then you see this glorious light peeking through the trees and you realize it was definitely worth it!  Sunrise has sunset beat by a mile!

The Dawn of a New Year:  August 19, 2014
I loved the fog over the reflecting pool in this sunrise photo I took at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Water Rushes Past the Geyser at Saratoga Spa State Park:  September 28, 2014
This has always been my favorite photo I’ve taken of the geyser at the State Park, with the fall colors in the background.

The Stream in Congress Park:  October 25, 2014
A photography friend and I had gone to to the Saratoga Downtown Business Association Fall Festival earlier that day to take photos.  After we walked around Broadway and the side streets, we headed into Congress Park.  It’s amazing the number of times I’ve taken photos at the park, and yet I always walk away with something a little different than the previous time, like this one here.

Skidmore Snow:  December 11, 2014
I took this photo on the Skidmore College campus.  Oh, what a fresh coat of snow can do for a winter landscape!

Columbian Spring in the Snow:  January 29, 2015
Here is a photo I took while wandering through Congress Park with a photographer friend.  It was cold but very worth it!  This photo (actually a composite of two exposures) took me quite a long time in Photoshop until I was happy with the colors and contrast.

Epic Sunset at Saratoga Spa State Park:  January 30, 2015
I got to the State Park that night just in time to catch this gorgeous sunset.  It was just below freezing, but the wind chill made it feel a lot colder.  After I took this shot with my 10 stop neutral density filter, I went to unscrew it, and it was frozen stuck!  I tried and I tried, and it wouldn’t budge (as the sun is making its grand exit!).  I finally, after moving my tripod and camera into a sheltered area and rubbing my hand warmer on it, got it off, but by that point the sun had set.

Glens Falls at Night:  February 18, 2015
I had fun shooting around the Glens Falls area with my friend Jason and my new lens.

Self-Portrait:  Congress Park:  May 3, 2015
Who needs a selfie stick?  How about a tripod and a wifi capable camera?  I took this shot in Congress Park with my Canon 6D using the EOS Remote app on my phone.

Congress Park at Night:  May 3, 2015
Congress Park has a magical, almost mythical look to it at night.  My friend Barb and I were just about to call it a night after photographing all over downtown Saratoga when we decided to snap a few photos in the park and I got this shot.  It’s a shame that tree’s not there anymore.

Spirit of Life at Dusk:  August 6, 2015
I just loved the light in the sky behind the statue in this photo.

Downtown Saratoga From Above:  August 9, 2015
By 2015, I’d photographed almost everything Saratoga has to offer on ground level, so the next logical step was to get up higher!  I really love this photo of downtown, being able to get Broadway, Congress Park, and the mountains off in the distance all in one shot.

Saratoga Race Course from Above:  August 9, 2015
Another aerial shot.  This one is of Saratoga Race Course.  It looks a lot smaller from up here!

Summer Flowers by Hathorn Spring:  August 14, 2015
This was probably my 100,000th photo of Hathorn Spring (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little), but my first with this beautiful early morning light and summer blooms.  This might be my favorite.

Looking Down at Some Classic Cars:  September 12, 2015
Here’s a photo I captured at the Adirondack Nationals Car Show in Lake George.  There were hundreds and hundreds of classic cars as far as the eye could see!

Fireworks Over Saratoga Lake, Part II:  July 3, 2016
While most people were enjoying the close by fireworks, I chose to capture the bursts going off across the lake.

Native Dancer at Night:  December 22, 2016
The street light made an interesting flare in this photo of the Native Dancer statue at night.

Caroline Street Colors:  December 22, 2016
I just love all the colors in this photo.

Looking Down from the Ferris Wheel:  August 26, 2017
An aerial view of the Washington County Fair from the ferris wheel.

An Aerial View of Glens Falls, NY:  October 26, 2018
In 2018, I got to ride over Saratoga and Glens Falls in a Cessna Skyhawk, and this is one of the photos I got.

Up Up and Away
This past fall I took my first hot air balloon ride over Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties and I captured this photo of another balloon in the air.

Stay tuned for my next post where I will share my favorite equine photos from the last decade!
