Visiting the Newport Mansions

I recently had a chance to tour some of the Gilded Age mansions of Newport, RI.  In this post, I will share some of my favorites of the many photos I took of them.

The Breakers is the crème de la crème of the Newport mansions, the summer home of the Vanderbilts.  It has this intricate gate out front.

The Breakers

The front of the Breakers.

The ornate dining room.  Take a look at those ceilings!

The billiard room.  Another decorative ceiling!

The Great Hall, which sort of feels like a lobby.

The photos above and below were both taken in the music room.

The library.

This area, with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, is known as the outdoor living room.

The back of the Breakers.

The side of the Breakers (see the outdoor living room on the second floor?)

This building is actually part of Salve Regina University, but it looks like a French château.

This building is Chateau-sur-Mer.  I didn’t have a chance to tour this building, but I took a few photos on the grounds.

Chateau-sur-Mer has this crazy tree on the grounds that almost swallows you up with its branches!

This building, which reminds me of Versailles, is Rosecliff, built for Tessie Oehlrichs.

There were so many butterflies outside Rosecliff.

Rosecliff Salon

I love the intricate carvings in the salon.

The library.

This building is Marble House, built for Alva Vanderbilt.

Marble House Dining Room
The dining room looks like it was plucked straight from Versailles, complete with the sun king emblem and portrait of Louis XIV.

The library (every mansion has one!)

The Gothic room, designed to display Alva’s collection of Gothic artifacts.

The dining room fireplace.

Looking down the staircase.

Alva’s bedroom.

Alva also had a teahouse built in back of the house.

I took some photos of the water as the sunset was approaching.  This is the Claiborne Pell Bridge.

Homes by the sea.

Have you ever been to the Newport Mansions?  Did you visit the same ones as me?
