2023 Canadian Rockies Trip Part II: Jasper National Park

Last summer, I made my third visit to the Canadian Rockies to take in the splendor of the mountains, rivers, lakes, and wildlife. In this post, I will share photos I took in Jasper National Park in Alberta.  Click here to view my previous posts about the Canadian Rockies.

While I was in Jasper, I stayed at the lovely Alpine Village Cabin Resort.

Above is the interior of our cabin. It was such a nice place to have a home base while exploring the park!

A view of another cabin from the deck.

Within Jasper National Park lies the tiny town of Jasper.

While the main attractions of Jasper National Park are the nature and wildlife, the town of Jasper offers visitors to the area an opportunity to grab a bite to eat and pick up a souvenir to bring back home.

Across the street from the main building at Alpine Village, there are some chairs and a nice spot to enjoy the Athabasca River. This is a photo looking back at the building with its vintage truck out front.

A view of Mount Edith Cavell, named for a British nurse who helped the Allies during World War II. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Here’s a wider view of the mountain with the lake. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Another cabin, with a sitting area out front.

I took many photos at Maligne Canyon, which purports to be the deepest canyon in the Rockies. This is one of the few I took with my 14-35mm lens. Click here to order a print of this photo.

The image stabilization in my camera and 100-500mm lens is so good, I can handhold .3 second shots like this one.

There is no shortage of angles and different vantage points to take a photo.

I combined many exposures together and averaged them to create the look of a longer exposure. Click here to order a print of this photo.

I caught this bear foraging from across the canyon. Click here to order a print of this photo.

I took what I consider to be the best trail ride of my life at Jasper Riding Stables. I’ve never witnessed such beautiful views before on horseback!

The view as we headed through the woods.

The view from the back of the pack as we looked out to the mountains.

Lake Edith is seen off in the distance.

My favorite photo from the trail ride, a view of Lake Edith and the Athabasca River. Click here to order a print of this photo.

I took this photo of the Athabasca River at sunrise from across the street from the Alpine Village. Click here to order a print of this photo.

This is a tighter shot, looking the other direction. Click here to order a print of this photo.

It was exciting to see this bear by the side in the road. Luckily I had my 100-500mm lens and could capture her from the safety of my car! Click here to order a print of this photo.

The Path of the Glacier Trail offers beautiful vistas. This is another combination of multiple exposures. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Another composite, taken with my 100-500mm lens. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Another angle with my 100-500.

In this photo, you can see Mount Edith Cavell, Angel Glacier, and Cavell Pond. Click here to order a print of this photo.

This close up photo of Cavell Pond looks like it could have been taken at the North Pole. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Here’s a slightly wider shot of the pond. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Once again, I combined many exposures in this photo of runoff from the Angel Glacier. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Here is another similarly combined shot. Click here to order a print of this photo.

I enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. I stayed there in 2018, and it was great to go back.

The lodge can be seen across Lac Beauvert.

Another bear! Click here to order a print of this photo.

The Canadian flag flies proudly on the grounds of the lodge.

Cheers!

Upon returning to Alpine Village, I saw this elk swimming across the Athabasca! Click here to order a print of this photo.

Here’s a closer shot of him. Click here to order a print of this photo.

A caught this grizzly bear from a distance. Not in view is her cub. Click here to order a print of this photo.

Towards the end of my visit, I went to Pyramid Lake. It was a beautiful calm day. Click here to order a print of this photo.

There is a bridge that leads to Pyramid Island on the lake. Click here to order a print of this photo.

The Goats and Glaciers Lookout along the Icefields Parkway affords another view of the Athabasca River. Click here to order a print of this photo.

A waterfall along the Icefields Parkway. Taking a 30 second exposure on a large lens like the 100-500 is not easy. Remote firing is a must to ensure that there is no camera shake!

I recently made a video comprised of over 200 still frames I shot of bears on my trip. Email subscribers, click here to watch the video.
