Visiting Three Chimneys Farm

Gun Runner headlines Three Chimneys’ stallion roster.

Last year, I visited Three Chimneys Farm, a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Versailles, KY. While I was there, I took some photos of the grounds of the stallions and the beautiful grounds. In this post I will share some of my favorites.

Gun Pilot stood his first season at stud last year. The grade 1-winning son of Gun Runner stands for a fee of $12,500 in 2026.

Newgate also stood his first season in 2025. In 2026, he stands for $17,500.

Newgate earned in excess of $1 million during his 12-race career.

Hall of Famer Gun Runner banked nearly $16 million in his 19-race career, making him one of the highest earning horses of all time.

Not all great racehorses pass on their talent to their progeny, but Gun Runner sure has, having sired 12 grade 1 winners and 16 millionaires to date.

Three Chimneys Farm was established in 1972 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clay.

In 2013, the farm was acquired by the Borges-Torrealba family.

A statue of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew sits in front of the stallion barn.

Seattle Slew stood part of his career at Three Chimneys, and commanded one of the highest stud fees of all time, standing for $800,000 in 1985. As previously mentioned, the current highest stud fee in North America is “only” $250,000.

Former stallions Slew O’ Gold, Exchange Rate, Seattle Slew, and Dynaformer’s name plates remain on their stall doors.

The cemetery at Three Chimneys contains such notable horses as Wild Again, winner of the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Classic; Fast Anna, sire of 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna; and Hall of Famer Slew O’ Gold.
