A Visit to Spendthrift Farm

Vekoma stands for a fee of $100,000 in 2026.

In 2025, I visited Spendthrift Farm, a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Lexington, KY, for the second time. Click here to see photos from my first visit. In this post, I’ll share my favorite photos from the more recent visit.


The farm is so beautiful in spring!


The late Malibu Moon was a foundation sire for Spendthrift Farm when it was purchased by B. Wayne Hughes.


Multiple graded stakes winner Vekoma has quickly risen up the stallion rankings. He’s had two crops make it to the races, with top earners the likes of Jonathan’s Way, Bracket Buster, and Praying.


On the racetrack, Vekoma won multiple grade 1 races and earned over $1 million.


Multiple graded stakes winner Kingsbarns, now in his second year at stud, stands for a fee of $17,500. His first foals hit the ground this year.

Graded stakes winner Maximus Mischief stands for a fee of $20,000. His son Raging Torrent, himself now standing stud at Lane’s End Farm, is a multiple grade 1 winner.


On the racetrack, Maximus Mischief won the Grade II Remsen Stakes as a two-year-old.


Maximus Mischief is walked back to the barn after breeding.


Multiple graded stakes winner Zandon, now in his third year at stud, stands for a fee of $7,500. His first foals hit the ground last year, with weanlings selling for as high $90,000.


On the racetrack, Zandon won the Grade I Blue Grass Stakes, the Grade II Woodward Stakes, and placed in a number of other graded stakes.


Multiple graded stakes winner Goldencents stands for a fee of $10,000. His highest earner is Mystik Dan, who won the 2024 Kentucky Derby.


Graded stakes winner Temple City stands for a private fee. His progeny include multiple graded stakes winners Du Jour and Temple City Terror.


Multiple grade 1 winner Mo Donegal stands for a fee of $5,000. His first two-year-olds will hit the track this year.


Greatest Honour stands for a fee of $7,500. His first two-year-olds will hit the track this year.


Multiple graded stakes winner Yaupon stands for a fee of $60,000. His first two-year-olds hit the track last year, and he was the leading first-crop sire, with progeny the likes of Arctic Beast, Solitude Dude, and Sassy C W.


Multiple grade 1 winner National Treasure, now in his second year at stud, stands for a fee of $35,000. His first foals hit the ground this year.


Multiple grade 1 winner Dornoch, now in his second year at stud, stands for a fee of $30,000. His first foals hit the ground this year.

Perennial leading sire Into Mischief stands for a fee of $250,000, tied for the highest currently in North America. The breed-shaping stallion has sired three Kentucky Derby winners, and is the grandsire of a fourth.


These yearlings are now two-year-olds, and we will soon enough see them at the races.
